Dr Chien graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1998 and completed basic physician training at Westmead Hospital. He proceeded to advanced training at Westmead Hospital, and was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, with subspecialty qualifications in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine. He was awarded a Royal Australasian College of Physicians Research Scholarship in 2008 to pursue research into obstructive sleep apnoea. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine at the University of Sydney and awarded a PhD for research into pathophysiological mechanisms of upper airways collapse in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

Research Interests
Dr Chien's areas of interest include general Respiratory Disorders, Cystic Fibrosis, Respiratory Failure, Non-Invasive Ventilation, Severe Asthma, and Sleep disorders including Snoring, Obstructive sleep apnoea, and Complex Sleep Disordered Breathing. He is a Staff Specialist in Respiratory and Sleep Disorders Medicine at Westmead Public Hospital. As part of his role at Westmead Public Hospital, Dr Chien is the Clinical Lead for the Medical High Dependency the Clinical Lead for the acute inpatient Respiratory Failure Service, the Severe Asthma Clinic and Massive Pulmonary Embolism Rapid Response Team. He continues to teach at all levels from Undergraduate students to advanced medical trainees.
